Accredited Universities Now Offer 2,000+ Online Programs

By Joy C. Harrison

The ability for students to start enrolling in non-traditional college programs is growing rapidly. Usually these programs are in the form of distance learning. Distance Learning can be through videotaped programs, sometimes airing on public television or public access, or through correspondence. However, the most recent trend has been to use current technology through the internet in a method called “e-learning”.

E-learning allows students to enroll in online universities through the internet. These online universities can be traditional campus-based colleges offering individual courses or complete degree programs, and there has also been a surge of 100% internet only online universities. Online universities are also offering more and more degrees in a variety of majors and degree levels each year, from certificate courses all the way to PhD programs!

Why enroll in an Online Degree Program?

Online universities offer students a different type of educational experience. Students are able to access their coursework from any computer with an internet connection. This can be at home, at work, a friend’s house, or even the public library. This not only allows students to determine the location of their learning, but also the day and time they choose to “attend” class.

Most coursework is done through a series of video lectures or readings, and while textbooks are sometimes still required, projects, essays and exams are all done online. Most students tend to enroll in online universities to enjoy the option of fitting their education in between their work, social, or family lifestyle.

How do you determine if e-learning is right for you?

A certain type of student is needed to be successful with online university courses. Because there is flexibility in when a student decides to complete their coursework, a great deal of self-discipline and motivation are required to stay on task and meet deadlines for assignments. Since these courses are online, basic computer knowledge is recommended, as well as the ability to use a word processing program to type papers. Being able to use e-mail to correspond with classmates and instructors is also helpful.

Online universities give the student a new way of learning and the popularity of e-learning is constantly growing. With this new method of delivering an education to students, many schools are opening up new doors so that almost anyone can now take the time to earn their degree.
